What Is JUVEDERM Injectable Gel?

A Juvederm treatment is an easy and instant cosmetic enhancement that gives you a refreshed look. It smooth wrinkles and restores volume – reversing the signs of aging. It can also be used to enhance facial features such as your lips and cheeks, adding fullness and definition with a natural look. As we age, our skin changes. Over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. JUVEDERM injectable gel is a FDA approved dermal filler. The smooth consistency gel helps to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your "smile lines" or "parentheses" (nasolabial folds-the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth). JUVEDERM is a smooth consistency, made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to give volume and support to the skin. Because it is non-animal-based and highly biocompatible, no pre-treatment testing is needed. Juvederm is available in two formulations to allow for a tailored treatment to your unique needs. Juvederm Ultra provides versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds. Juvederm Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles. Results last about 6-9 months and can be made to last even longer with a simple follow-up treatment a few weeks after the initial injection. With JUVEDERM the injection process takes only about 15-30 minutes and results are immediate. Plus, there's minimal recovery or downtime.

How Does JUVEDERM Work?

JUVEDERM is eased under the skin using a fine needle to augment, or fill, the soft tissue of the dermis-the dense inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis-to add volume and diminish wrinkles and folds. JUVEDERM injectable gel is used most effectively for those wrinkles and folds in the lower third of your face, like "laugh lines", "smile lines" or "parentheses" (nasolabial folds), or "marionette lines" (oral commissures).

JUVEDERM is made from hyaluronic acid-a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to hydrate and add volume. Hyaluronic acid may diminish with age, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds. JUVEDERM injectable gel works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in theskin, helping to smooth wrinkles and folds.

After the treatment, some temporary injection-related reactions may occur, including redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period.

You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last up to 6 months or more. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental "touch up" treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.

The following list highlights the different areas you may want to consider treating.

Smile Lines: You can fill-in and reduce the visibility of the lines that run vertically from the side of your nose to the corners of your upper lip with a Juvederm treatment.

Cheeks: In addition to addressing wrinkles, Juvederm can restore facial volume lost due to aging or weight loss giving the face a rejuvenated appearance.

Lip Fullness:Juvederm can replenish the fullness you’ve lost or provide you with the fuller-looking lips you’ve always wanted.

Marionette Lines: Juvederm can soften the vertical lines and wrinkles that form below the corners of the mouth, giving a sad or angry look to the face.

Chin: Juvederm can re-contour the chin, adding firmness and definition.

Crow's Feet: A wrinkle smoothing injectable can quickly reduce the wrinkles and lines that form at the corner of the eyes as a result of aging, sun exposure, smoking, and facial expressions.

Forehead Lines: A wrinkle smoothing injectable can lessen or completely remove the lines in your forehead that are caused by repeated contractions.

Frown Lines: Repeated muscle contraction can cause lines between your brows to form. A wrinkle smoothing injectable can be used to treat these wrinkles and make them disappear.

If you're considering wrinkle treatments with Juvederm, your healthcare professional should ask about your medical history to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for treatment. Juvederm should not be used in patients who have:
  • Severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis or presence of multiple severe allergies.
  • A history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins. In addition, you and your healthcare professional should discuss the following important treatment considerations in order to help avoid unsatisfactory results and complications:
  • Patients who are using medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, may experience increased bruising or bleeding at the injection site (as with any injection). You should inform your healthcare professional before treatment if you are using these types of substances.
  • If laser treatments, chemical peels, or any other procedure based on active dermal response is considered after treatment with Juvederm, there is a possible risk of an inflammatory reaction at the treatment site.
  • Juvederm should be used with caution in patients on immunosuppressive therapy as there may be an increased risk of infection.
  • The safety of Juvederm for use during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years, has not been established.
  • The safety of Juvederm in patients with a history of excessive scarring (e.g., hypertrophic scarring and keloid formations) and pigmentation disorders has not been studied.
